Mentoring Washington’s Young Women to

Become Leaders of Tomorrow!

MISS WASHINGTON'S OUTSTANDING TEEN Registration Forms and Documents

Our history:

The Miss America Organization (MAO) was founded in 1921 by the Chamber of Commerce in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Their goal was to extend the tourist season by one week. And now 85 years later, the Miss America Organization has become the largest provider of scholarship dollars for women in the world…45 million! And what is even more exciting is that you don’t have to win a title to earn scholarship dollars. The Miss Washington Scholarship Organization is an official preliminary of Miss America. You can find more detailed information about the Miss America Program at www.missamerica.org and The Miss Washington Scholarship Organization at www.misswashington.org.

There has been a long standing desire among many of the states to see a similar program established for younger ladies ages 13 to 17. With a lot of hard work, we conducted our first national Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant in August of 2005 in Orlando, Florida. 52 young ladies from every state, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands met for a fun filled week which culminated in the crowning of Meghan Miller from Texas. This August the fifth annual Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant will happen and our newly selected Miss Washington’s Outstanding Teen 2009, will represent us with Washington Style! You can find more detailed information at www.maoteen.org.

For Washington, this will be our sixth Teen Pageant. Our original title was “Miss Teen Washington”, at that time the national pageant had not been formed.

Like our parent organization, we wanted to extend our program and provide opportunities for personal development through scholarships and achievement opportunities. Our program is about building self-esteem and recognizing young people for their individual accomplishments. Whatever your career goals, the Miss Washington Outstanding Teen Program will provide you real life skills that go beyond your pageant experience.

What ages are the Outstanding Teen Representatives?

You must be 13 years of age on or before the date of your first pageant competition (local or state) and be at least in eighth grade. You can be no older than 17 years of age and no more than a rising senior and still attending high school by the time of the national competition and not eligible to compete in the Miss Washington/Miss America Pageant.

What are the Optional Competitions?

Optional Competitions” for those who want to participate in the Teen Spokesmodel, Teen Photogenic and/or Teen Model competitions. This is an opportunity for you to gain some additional experience and it will have no bearing on the outcome of the pageant itself….there will be a separate panel of judges. If you are not competing, be sure to attend so that you can cheer for your sister contestants.

Each contestant must prepare a Resume and Platform Issue Statement. These documents are what the judges use during your 8 minute Private Interview. The next phase is the on stage preliminary competition where you will be judged in Talent, Evening Wear, Lifestyle and Fitness in Sportswear, Academic Achievement and On Stage Interview where you will be asked a question. During the Preliminary Pageant the contestants are divided up into two competition groups: Alpha and Beta. On Final Competition Night the Top Ten Finalists are announced. The Top Ten Finalists then compete again in all of the on stage competitions except for On Stage Interview. The Ten will be narrowed to a Top Five who will then compete in the On Stage Interview. After that phase of competition, our new Miss Washington’s Outstanding Teen and Runners Up are announced.

This issue should be one that you would like to advocate for during your year of service, *as Miss Washington’s Outstanding Teen.

What clothing will I need to participate?

(please see website for more details on Competition Clothes)

  • Interview Outfit- No business suits or pants suits allowed! A “teen stylish outfit” is the preferred look for your interview. Dress as if you were giving a speech to your student body, interviewing for a job at a trendy boutique, or being introduced as the new class president. Your attire should reflect your personality, vibrancy and enthusiasm!

  • Talent Outfit- Talent dress or costume must be appropriate for the talent being performed. The dress or costume should reflect and enhance the talent performance and not be dominant. The contestant must provide all props or items required for the Talent competition.

  • Evening Wear or Evening Gown- Your evening gown should be formal which is appropriate attire for an elegant black-tie event or a very formal prom. Your gown must be floor length however modest slits in the dress or tiered lengths are also fine. (make sure the back of the evening gown is floor length) It is important to remember that gowns should be age appropriate. No gloves.

  • Back-up Evening Gown- You will want to bring a back up evening gown, just in case. The same consideration should be used when selecting your back up gown as with your primary evening gown.

  • Lifestyle and Fitness in Sportswear- Think of what you would wear while participating in your favorite fitness activity: Aerobics, Running, Tennis, Golf, Cheerleading, Dance, Tae Kwon Do, etc. This outfit should be functional and show your personality. Minimal jewelry and footwear should be appropriate for the outfit. Remember your shoe selection should be one that you can easily walk in. Flip-flops are discouraged as footwear.

  • Rehearsal Clothes- Nice casual clothes will be appropriate attire for rehearsals. Tops should be full length (please no midriff showing!), comfortable slacks or shorts and comfortable shoes or tennis shoes. Remember, you will be on your feet a lot and will need to be comfortable. Also include a cardigan in case it is chilly.

What is the Pine Cone Princess Program?

The Pine Cone Princess program is designed to benefit young ladies 7 to 11 years of age. The Princess program allows these young ladies to be exposed to the magical world of “Miss America” and “Miss Washington” before they are of competition age. Our program goal is to provide each Teen and/or Miss Representative the chance to mentor and develop leadership skills as the Pine Cone Princesses have the opportunity to become better prepared with manners, etiquette, poise and self-confidence.

Must I mentor a Pine Cone Princess?

This is an optional program but we feel it can be a great opportunity for you to experience mentoring and a wonderful opportunity to develop your leadership skills. It can also be a great support system as you go through the Miss Washington’s Outstanding Teen Competition.

How do I find a Pine Cone Princess?

There are a few ways this can be initiated.

  • You can contact a potential princess that you know through your school, church, baby sitting jobs, youth programs, etc…and ask if she would like to participate in the Pine Cone Princess Program.

  • A princess candidate can contact a Teen or Miss Representative and ask the Teen or Miss Representative to be her mentor.

What are Gratitude Journals?

We are asking that each Pine Cone and Outstanding Teen keep a “Gratitude Journal” and write down 5 things every day that they are grateful for. They are asked to bring their journals to the Teen Forum and may be asked to share from them. It is our hope that each young lady will learn to look for the good in life and will develop the “art of appreciation”.
